Piotr Szychowski

One of the greatest pianists of Poland’s young generation, was born in 1981 in Wrocław. He graduated with distinction from Karol Szymanowski Music School in Wrocław as a student of Professor Janina Butor. He graduated with high merit from Ignacy Jan Paderewski Music Academy in Poznań under the tutelage of Professor Waldemar Andrzejewski. He has also studied at the Universität der Künste in Berlin in the piano class of Professor Rainer Becker. He continued his musical education taking an active part in Master courses in Berlin, Darmstadt, Wrocław and Duszniki led by Dang Thai Son, Bernard Ringeissen, Klaus Hellwig, Hans Leygraf, Ryszard Bakst, Victor Merzhanov and Andrzej Jasiński. In 2009 he obtained the title of Doctor of Arts in Music and took up the post of Associate Professor in the Piano Department of Ignacy Jan Paderewski Music Academy in Poznań.

In 2009 he made his debut at the Berlin Philharmonie with Das Sinfonie Orchester Berlin under the direction of Ulrich Fritze, performing Mozart’s Piano Concerto in c minor, KV491. In July 2010 he performed with José Carreras to an audience of 10,000 people to celebrate the 777th anniversary of the Polish town of Toruń.

Festival and competition awards

In 2005 he represented Poland at the 15th Frederic Chopin International Piano Contest in Warsaw and in 2006 at the Leeds International Piano Competition.

Piotr Szychowski has received many awards at national and international piano competitions including:

  • 1st Prize at the Jeunesses Musicales International Piano Competition in Bucharest
  • 1st Prize at the International Piano Competition in Rome
  • 3rd Prize at the International Piano Competition in Ettlingen, Germany
  • 3rd Prize at the 6th National Frédéric Chopin Competition for Polish Candidates for the 15th International Frédéric Chopin Competition in Warsaw
He has benefited from various scholarships granted by the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage, the National Fund for the Benefit of Children, The Mayors of Poznań and Wrocław, DAAD (Deutscher Akademischer Austausch Dienst) of Bonn and the scholarship programme “Młoda Polska” of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
